The Relationship Between Religion/Spirituality & Health (Bruce Rabin)

« back to classes page

There is a relationship between an individual’s participation in religious or spirituality activities (R/S) and the quality of their health. This two session Osher class will provide the best scientific information documenting the effect of R/S on mental and physical health and engage in discussion of interesting and unexplainable testimonies that suggest there may be something beyond our understanding. The term for this is ‘transcendence.’ I will include several concepts, but my primary focus will be on R/S as a countermeasure to stress and a factor that encourages healthy lifestyle behaviors. The information discussed will be applicable to all faiths. When we finish, do not anticipate any consensus other than that there is a relationship between R/S and health and that awareness of this can benefit those who recognize its existence.
