Many animals travel long distances, on circular routes, to and from a remote destinations each year. They migrate thousands of miles to locations where the weather is better, food is more abundant, offspring are more likely to survive, and they are less threatened by predators. There are numerous great annual migrations, and we will discuss a trio of them in three separate classes: Herds of wildebeests and their companions who travel overland in East Central Africa. Humpback whales who swim in the North Pacific. Monarch butterflies who fly between the U.S. and Mexico. We will learn about the animals who travel, where they migrate, the challenges they face enroute, how they cooperate and navigate, and current and future threats to these migrations.
