« back to classes page
Many may not realize that Meadowcroft Rockshelter has produced evidence for some of the earliest human presence in the Americas. When it was excavated in the 1970s by archaeologists from the University of Pittsburgh, its dating was highly controversial, but today this dating fits much better with the new archaeological consensus about when humans first arrived in the Americas. This class will include an introductory session covering what was found here, why it was controversial originally, and the continuing significance to North American archaeology. Then the second class we will take a field trip to the site and learn more about its discovery and excavation including recent excavations to stabilize exposed deposits while viewing the shelter with the help of the staff of the Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, which today is administered by the Heinz History Center.
