John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, is memorialized as the “Great Chief Justice” for his lengthy tenure and for his effort to make the Court a co-equal branch of the national government. The author of more than 500 opinions, Chief Justice Marshall is best remembered for his opinion in Marbury v. Madison, 5 U.S. 137 (1803), which created the power of judicial review for the Court. This session will assess Chief Justice Marshall’s ideology and its translation into opinions during his three decades of service. There will be an opportunity for question and answer at the conclusion of the program.
