Americans look upon the events surrounding the founding of our Republic with reverence and awe. The men responsible for that founding are revered for their extraordinary vision, wisdom, and sagacity. While we may know the men, we have little appreciation for the voices of the largely forgotten members of the founding generation - women, slaves and native Americans. What sort of impact, if any, did those voices have on the founding of the American republic. This is the question we will examine during this course. Class members will read two books by modern historians that analyze the complexities of the founding era and focus specifically on the influence of women, slaves and native Americans. We will read these books together in an effort to piece together the impact of these forgotten voices on founding of the country.
