Eighteen-year-olds left home to save the world. During this visit to the Heinz History Center, Archivist Sierra Green will pull materials from more than a dozen collections to paint a picture of life during World War II. Topics will range from how neighborhoods and families are affected by world events, how businesses and industry responded, and how institutions, places of worship and cultural groups provided support. Pittsburghers from every background stepped forward to serve. We will hear their stories of selfless bravery and heroism - and pain and loss. Class members will break into groups to participate in a hands-on examination of archived materials to learn and report observations and pose questions. Along the way we will use resources to seek out historical details about individuals, area institutions, and neighborhoods to aid in your own research efforts.
