Jane Austen’s first completed novel, Northanger Abbey, and her last, Persuasion, were published together six months after her death. We’ll examine these two novels together to see if her art changed over her writing career. We’ll also explore the fashionable setting of Bath, visit some (sham) castles, and learn more about the 18th century “horrid” novels that Austen loved to parody. Along the way we’ll learn about Nelson’s decisive victory at Trafalgar and the Iron Duke’s victory at Waterloo, events that are hinted at in Persuasion.
