”Such Friends”: The Literary Life 1925 (Kathleen Dixon Donnelly)

ID : 5371
« back to classes page
What a year! The birth of The New Yorker magazine, the publication of both The Great Gatsby and Mrs. Dalloway, and F. Scott Fitzgerald meets Ernest Hemingway in a bar—and that’s all before June! Before the year ended the Scopes “Monkey” trial dragged on in Tennessee, Josephine Baker was kicking up a storm in Paris, the Marx Brothers’ premiered their Broadway hit musical The Cocoanuts, and Hemingway’s first collection, In Our Time, was published by Boni and Liveright. We will take a look at the ‘such friends’ who created these classics 100 years ago, whether in the Bloomsbury neighborhood of London, the Left Bank of Paris, or midtown Manhattan, and what was happening in their personal and professional lives.
