Changes in demographics are creating a global crisis. Countries with declining, aging populations are stressed by rising demands on medical and social systems while younger nations struggle to find jobs and opportunities for a growing population. Younger, larger and poorer nations and older, smaller, richer nations make different demands on the international system. More people are on the move, seeking economic opportunities or fleeing political disruption, and more nations resist migrants. Climate change intensifies these movements within and among nations. Developments in the United States mirror global patterns. Our course will seek to illuminate these developments, suggest costs and threats and possible values and rewards. The aim is to heighten our understanding of this escalating national and global challenge.
