The magic of the short story is right in its name: it tells us a story, usually in one sitting. A good story holds our attention with a unity of focus. It connects us to a person or place or unmistakable feeling. The best short stories end only on the page. We keep thinking about them. In this class, we will read and discuss some classics of the form (William Faulkner, Joyce Carol Oates) alongside contemporary stories (Zadie Smith, James McBride). We’ll look at influences, techniques, and themes across the decades of American social life. Expect lively discussion!
