While doing research on Wilhelm Roentgen and his “discovery” of x-rays for my Osher course, I came across an interesting footnote to the work of Philipp Lenard, a contemporary physicist and a Nazi, whom history has forgotten. I found six additional Nazi physicians and/or scientists of whom I described their work for Hitler’s regime. I subsequently discovered a second group of 13, mostly physicians. This course is in two parts: Part 1 describes the work of the first group of which the common thread was that they all died as old men and mostly got away with their crimes. Part 2 describes the 13 who didn’t get away with it, most of whom paid for their crimes with their lives. So, what did these scientists and physicians contribute to medical science, and when did they turn toward “the dark side?”
