Women were speaking up for women’s rights long before the Women’s Movement revived in the 1960s. This class will look at the women who staked out and articulated positions advocating for women from the colonial period through 1960. Using a variety of rationales, the women proposed positions for women at odds with the prevailing versions of religion, family, law, economics, sexuality, and gender. Their arguments spanned a range of ideas, from claims based on equality to those of the special nature of women.
