Decried as madness. Admired for the power of its imagery. Called the forerunner of Communism. Called the first argument for equality of the sexes. Centuries after Plato’s Republic was written its questions still challenge us to think about: how should we educate our young, what is knowledge, what the best moral code, is there a reason for the universe, what should government do and not do. Lectures will examine various interpretations of Plato’s Republic and briefly compare it to other utopian visions like Thomas More’s Utopia and B.F. Skinner’s Walden II and briefly examine the Republic’s impact on subsequent generations of thinkers. Members will be asked to read Plato’s Republic either in print or online.
