When attending an opera performance, what production elements capture your attention? Beyond the music and story (which all operas contain) do you focus on the scenery, lighting, costumes, or makeup? How does scenery change or snow fall on stage? How does the lighting affect what you look at on stage and how you feel? How are the beautiful costumes built to help the singers? How much makeup is needed so everyone in the theater sees artists’ expressions? Is everyone in an opera production wigged? Are there differences in the sound from the singers and the orchestra in different areas of the theater? This course will explore behind-the-scenes elements of opera production by watching videos of beloved operas and “pull back the curtain” for you to notice and enjoy more about the opera at a performance.
