Song of Solomon (1977) is Toni Morrison’s third novel. A sprawling story about several generations of the Dead family, it was Morrison’s most ambitious novel to date. A National Book Critics Circle Award winner and breakthrough success both critically and commercially, Song of Solomon was selected for the Book of the Month Club, making Morrison the first Black woman author to ever have a novel chosen for the Club. According to Charles Larson’s review, Morrison’s narrative is "so marvelously orchestrated" that "it not only excels on all of its respective levels, not only works for all of its interlocking components, but also—in the end—says something about life (and death) for all of us." Join us as we read and discuss Morrison’s novel in context with the historical and literary texts that inform it.
