In southwestern Pennsylvania, we are sitting on top of history; a fascinating, sometimes ugly, powerful regional history. This class is all about coal: its formation, by-products, extraction, the mining life, strikes and unions, regional mining disasters, and mine damage and reclamation. Most of the discussion will stay regional, including sites such as local coke ovens, coal towns, reclamation sites, and efforts to keep the history of coal alive in our region so that participants can go out and see for themselves.
