This one-day course examines the immediate and long-term aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Participants will explore the extensive destruction caused by the collapse of the Twin Towers, which resulted in approximately 1.8 million tons of debris. The course covers the hazardous substances released, including asbestos, lead, PCBs, cement dust, VOCs, heavy metals, and combustion byproducts. Special focus is given to the investigative work conducted by the RJ Lee Group, commissioned by Deutsche Bank, to assess the impact on the former Bankers Trust building. Learn about the innovative sampling and testing methods developed, the identification of WTC dust, and the broader contamination found up to five miles away. Advanced techniques used in this investigation, such as automated scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy and mass spectrometry, will also be discussed.
