Reinhold Niebuhr provided an invitation to Paul Tillich to flee Nazi Germany which saved his life. They were friends and taught and wrote together for two decades founding a distinctive school known as Christian Realism. They addressed the social issues of economic justice, racism, and most notably war and peace. They were the leading North American theologians of the 20th century. They criticized each other and worked together as allies.
