This course will explore the applications of biotechnology to agricultural animals and plants. The basics of generating genetically engineered (GE) animals and plants and the regulation of GE animals and plants will be discussed. GE farm animals have been developed that show increased growth rate and address animal welfare issues. GE animals also play an important role in human medicine for the production of human pharmaceuticals and as organ donors. Insects such as mosquitoes have been genetically engineered to control diseases like dengue fever. Livestock and pets have been cloned. GE plants have been developed that show enhanced disease resistance and herbicide tolerance, and have improved quality and nutritional traits. This course will be taught in a lecture format but with ample time set aside for questions and discussion.
