This course will be a survey of world architecture, past and present, organized around one structural type—domes. Domes were the first long-span structures and we will explore how they were employed for grand structures to express the highest aspirations of religion and government. We will meet the people who came together to make domed structures—religious and government leaders, architects, and engineers. Lectures will be richly illustrated with photos and diagrams. Comparisons of the 15+ structures will be made regarding size (plan and volume) and construction methodology.
