Hollywood sometimes has interesting and important things to say about American politics. Political movies can be comedies or thrillers. They can be about elections or revolutions. They can represent the politics we love, or that which we hate. Each week class members will be expected to watch, in advance, a classic political movie from the 1950s through the 1980s, with themes ranging from insider political sausage-making to paranoid fantasies of outsider control. All six were voted by critics as among the 25 most significant political films of all time. This will be primarily a discussion class, so please be prepared to weigh in on the issues these movies raise and their implications for our current political environment.
