This series of classes will tell the story of Ernie Pyle, considered by many to be the most recognized and greatest war correspondent in history. This class will be conducted in two sessions, with the first class covering Pyle’s early life growing up on a farm in Dana, Indiana, to his rise as a roving reporter, copy editor, and then aviation columnist for the Scripts Howard’s Washington Daily News. There will be selected readings throughout the class, some of which will be his observations from his several visits to the Pittsburgh area. Week two also features selected videos and readings that cover Pyle’s storied career as a WWII Correspondent covering the war in Europe and in Asia, where he was killed in action on the island of Ie Shima.
