Did you ever wonder about the research happening on our campus? In this course, two PhD students from the CMU Department of Languages, Cultures, and Applied Linguists will present their research. Joseph Garcia will present his investigation of study-abroad learners in Morocco and how the identities, ideologies, and sociolinguistic competence of five sojourners transformed over their year abroad. Devon Renfroe noticed that many second language speakers are afraid of making mistakes in the second language that will cause offense to first language speakers. She will present her study of what happens when second-language Korean speakers make “mistakes” with speech style in real-time interactions with Koreans.
